Legal Question in Sexual Harassment in New York
Dropping a Rape Case
Recently, I was raped and too afraid to contact the police (or even go to the hospital) directly after the event. After I did go to report the crime, I felt like I didn't remember enough about the event to be good enough for the police to catch this monster. The detective I spoke with about my case made me feel like my story was missing too much and just wasn't good enough. I'm finding this whole ordeal just as stressful and traumatic as the event itself. Is there any way I can stop the investigation so I can just get on with my life? My counselor and SANE coordinator are the only helpful ones in this process, and I'd like to just continue with only their help. Is it possible to get the detective to just stop the case and leave me alone?

Hopefully this does not sound harsh but the detective has an obligation to the public (and other potential victims) to put this criminal behind bars. If they gather enough evidence, he will be arrested and prosecuted with or without your participation.
