Legal Question in Tax Law in New York

back state taxes

I currently work in NY but live in NC. The tax department in NY has notified me that I owe $6300. in taxes going back to 1982.They said I never filed but I did even though I was working in NJ at the time but living in NY.The actual tax is $700 and the rest is penalty and interest. What could NY do to me and what recourse do I have?

Re: back state taxes

If you have copies of your tax returns, you may be able to work something out.

I would think that the notice from NY was not the first one you received. If you disregarded prior notices over the years, your bargaining power is not too good.

If the taxes are due, they can get a judgment and garnish your wages and also seize assets located in NY. I suggest you try to work out some compromise.
