Fraudulant Tax Returns
I am wondering if it is illegal for my preparer (my soon to be Ex-husband, a CPA) to tell me that I owe the government 8,000 when I only owed 2,000? He prepared my taxes this last year and I came across the ''correct'' copy that he sent the IRS and found the discrepency. The balance of the money I believe he used to pay other things. I would like to know if this is as illegal as I think and what could be the penalty?
Thank you for your time.

Re: Fraudulant Tax Returns
You have not indicated under what status these returns were filed (joint with him, married filing separately, single or head of household) nor what the "correct" return and/or the filed return indicated as income and/or tax liability. If separate returns were properly filed there could be a dramatic difference in taxes. More information is needed to properly provide you with an answer.
