marriage and tax status
My girlfriend and I are considering eloping. We are both of legal age. If we were to get married, how would that affect our status as dependents of our respective parents and would there be any way for our parents to find out what we had done? Would we have to file income tax returns jointly?

If you are worried about whether your parents can continue to claim you each as their respective dependents, then you're too damn young to get married! Finish school, get a job, grow up.

Parents do not have to list the marital status of their dependents. You do not have to file jointly, but may file married-filing-separately (which has specific disadvantages).
