If someone gets married and does not change their name on their Social Security card, can they still claim single on their taxes? Will they get caught? I know someone that is planning on doing that and just want to make sure they wont get in any trouble. They live in New York State.

If they are legally married, there are only 2 legal ways to file, if they live together and are not separated: Married filing a joint return or married filing a separate return. They cannot usually file as a single, unmarried taxpayer, unless they meet the criteria for doing so.
