Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

I am a 21 year old college student who is home for the summer in New York State. Today, I was pulled over for going 52 in a 30, which is possibly a 6 point ticket. This is my first offense on my license. Because of that the officer told me to plea not guilty, and he said that if I was clean before now and the court date that he would get rid of the ticket. I have obtained my driving record from the my.dmv website, to possibly show the judge. I plan on mailing the plea to the court tomorrow.

I am new to this, however, and was wondering if there was anything else that I should do before the court date.

If you mail in a not guilty plea, the court will most likely fix a trial date. If the ticket is upstate, you'd be better off having an attorney go to court on your behalf to negotiate a plea to a non-point charge or secure a point reduction. If your case in in NYC, there is no plea bargaining and a non-attorney has pretty much zero chance of beating a speeding ticket. Please feel free to call my office at 212-920-6950 for a free telephone consultation and review of your ticket.

Good luck!

It all depends upon where the ticket was issued. If it was issued within the 5 counties of NYC then there is only a possibility of either a not guilty or guilty after hearing result. Some very competent lawyers may be able to effectuate a small point reduction. To achieve a not guilty decision in NYC you & your attorney have to overcome 2 very difficult hurtles ,the officer's estimation & the usage of an acceptable speed measuring devise. Very few attorneys are competent enough to do so. Upstate cases provide better opportunities. Contact my office @ 718-834-0087 for a free phone consultation.
