Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Hi. I am living in NH now. I used to live in upstate NY. Back in 2005, I got a ticket for driving with no insurance. I pled guilty. I paid money for it. Apparently I didn't get quite all of it paid. A couple weeks ago, I went to get my NH license. They couldn't do it because NY has me on a suspended license since about March or April this year. The town I was convicted in had just now earlier this year notified the NY DMV about the case. I called the NY DMV to see why I was suspended. They told me about the case. I called the town court. Long story short, I paid the remaining $200 to lift the suspension. The town court is saying I should be all set, but the lady I spoke to from the NY DMV said that I am suspended for a year and have a $750 civil penalty. I can't seem to get a clear cut answer on what is going on. Can someone help? It would be greatly appreciated. I really really need to get my NH license very soon. Thank you.

The one year loss of license is mandatory in New York when you are convicted of driving without insurance. If you in fact did have insurance on this car in 2005, you can try and "un-do" the guilty conviction which will remove it (and the revocation) from your license. Otherwise, you must remain revoked for one year. Otherwise, go to a New York DMV office and see if you are eligible for a "restricted license".

I am sorry to hear about this problem but New York treats driving while un-insured very seriously.
