Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Being pulled over in a private parking lot

So I own a bunch of trucks for my business. Every Winter I take all but one off the road instead of paying insurance on them while they are just sitting (commercial insurance is triple personal $). So this spring I was warming up one of my trucks in the parking lot of my apartment complex. Keep in mind this is a privately owned complex. There was a cop rolling by....I thought nothing of it since there are break ins here all the time and the cops are always around. I moved the truck approximately 30 feet down the parking lot and the cop pulled me over. I thought this was completely ludicris since I was on private property but apparantly not since today a judge took my license for 1 year. I also will pay a total of $1350 + a few more court appearances before all is done.

Since the truck was in a private lot, and did not at any time enter a public roadway, is this traffic stop even legal? If the traffic stop is not even legal, doesnt the rest of this situation become 'fruit of the poisoned tree', so to speak?
