Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Why am I being punished for driving a rental car?

I rented a car back in June of this year, a cop pulled me over for no reason other than he hasn't seen kentucky license plates in a long time. I was on my way returning the car when he stopped me. He said that the plates did not match the car and he wrote me a bunch of tickets. I went to court yesterday and the judge threw out the insurance ticket, but left the registration tickets and improper license plate tickets. She said that even though I was driving a rental car at the time that it was still my job to provide proof of registration for a car that I just rented. When did it become a crime to drive a rental car, and why am I being punished for their mistake?

You are obligated to provide proof of registration of the vehicle. That is, and always has been the responsibility of the driver.

You should have adjounred the matter to get the docs from the rental company.

Good Luck
