Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Reduce points on license

I received a speeding ticket 11-30 over limit in suffolk county, long island, ny. My attorney never appeared on my behalf and i was out of town. I was now notified that i have 6 points on my license and can appeal.

I paid the fine, will i be able to reduce points from my license?

Re: Reduce points on license

Dear Reader:

In examining this response, please note that we are not entering into an attorney/client relationship, that this is to be taken as informative, and not as legal advice, that it is always best to speak to a lawyer in your area and/or in the area where the transaction and/or events occurred, and that my answer is necessarily limited by the fact that I have not seen the documentation or had an opportunity to go over the matters with you in detail.

There is a safety course that you can take once every 18 months, I beleive, that will take 3 points or 4 points off your license, but you can't take it more often than that to remove even more points. Call or visit DMV, AAA, or the Empire Safety Council for details. Note: if you hold a driver's license from some other state, you may or may not have picked up points, and different rules apply to commercial licenses as well.

You should also inquire about the possibility you were suspended for failure to appear on the Court date, that there is a warrant out for you, and/or about getting the case reopened if you did not know about the hearing date.

As I mentioned before, this may be something that you will want to take up with a lawyer of your own selection, either in your state or area or in a place where some of the pertinent events occurred.
