Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Traffic Accident and 2 Tickets

I was in a traffic accident in upstate

New York in late Decemeber. The

accident was my fault. I failed to

yeild at a red light (did not see the

other vehicle). At first the officer was

writing up a ticket for failure to yeild,

and then for some reason he

changed it to a failure to obey traffic

singal. I also recived a ticket for

having unsafe tires on my vehicle.

Im only 17 and am still on a jr

lisence so I am at risk of getting my

lisence suspended due to the 3pt

traffic ticket. I belive its considerd a

major traffic ticket. I took a

defensive driving course 2 months or

so ago in hopes to help my case. I

have a meeting with the DA next

month. Does anyone have any

adivce for me. Its crucial I keep my

lisence due to school and work.

Re: Traffic Accident and 2 Tickets

First of all, don't panic. Traffic tickets are routinely "downgraded" according to certain policies the DA's office might follow. You stand a good chance of having this reduced on your own, but a local attorney familiar with the DA might be able to do a little better. Get better tires before you meet and show him the receipt for them. That will help some. If you can't afford an attorney but think you need one, contact your county's Office of Assigned Counsel, you may be able to get one for free.
