Chances of receiving actual inheritance
I received a rather large inheritance from a friend, no relation. In the letter from the attorney it says that it is in the process of looking for the heirs in law through geneology services. What are the chances of actually receiving this gift? The lawyer states they have no idea who these people are and progress is slow. This lawyer has been the deceased lawyer for a very long time and I am sure knows who is who.
Also, what is the generation skip tax?

Re: Chances of receiving actual inheritance
I am assuming, since the decedent is not a relative, that there must have been a will. Did you get a percentage of the estate, or a fixed amount? If the latter, and there's $$ in the estate, your chances of actually getting the bequest are good. I'd need to see the terms of the will and the inventory of the estate (both of which you should get from the attorney or the Surrogate's Court). If you wish, I can assist you.
