Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

disposition of property left to me in estate

My father passed away 1 month ago and left to me his collection of licensed hand guns. I do not currently have a gun permit. What must I do to either sell the guns or give them to someone with a permit. What is my current situation with them in my possesion? What must I do legally under these circumstances?

You should check with your local police department. If you have no need for a permit, they will advise you on several procedures: if you want to keep the collection, you can decommission the guns (remove firing pins, etc.), or if you want a permit they can instruct you on the procedure for applying for same. If you decide you merely want to sell the collection, they can advise how to carry them to shows or to dealers who may be interested in purchasing the collection. I suggest that, if you decide to sell them and will be carrying them around, you get a letter from your chief of police authorizing you to carry them.
