Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York
What documentation can I provide?
My mother, who died in 2003, was a Holocaust survivor from Hungary. She had lost almost her entire family and all of her assets. In the years prior to her death, she applied for numerous compensation programs as they became available. In the summer of 2004, I received a letter from Hungary, stating that that the Government had approved a small settlement for loss of life of survivor's relatives. It went on to state that if the approved survivor's were by now deceased, their heirs could collect upon sending a notarized letter stating that the survivor was deceased and including legal documentation saying who the heirs are, if available. This letter was in English and I responded accordingly. (I do not read/write Hungarian.)I wrote that my mother had died intestate; my sister and I were her only legal heirs. After several months, I received another letter, this time in Hungarian, asking for more documentation. I eventually had this translated and made a call to Hungary to find out what was needed. They wanted another letter stating that we were the only heirs- but in Hungarian. I had a friend help me write this. After a year, my sister received another letter asking for the same information. I'm at my a loss as to what to do.
