If an elderly woman signs a lease agreement and dies befor it is up. Is the estate liable for the continued payment of the apartment?

Yes. However, generally the landlord will release the estate from future obligations under the lease.

Yes, but the release from further liability is subject to the terms of the Lease, how long the Landlord needs to re-rent the apartment and the negotiation ability of the Executor. Until some agreement is reached the Estate remains liable to the end of the term of the lease.
