Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Father in law passed away. Just days before, he set up a trust, stating that if my husband was to become a beneficiary of said 401k, that trustee was to admit it to the trust. According to paperwork we received from the 401k company, my husband is already beneficiary on the account.

Assuming beneficiary designation is going to take hold over the trust.

Am I right or wrong?
