Letters Testamentary are the document issued by the Surrogates' Court granting you authority to act as the Executor. You can't do anything without them.

If your father's estate is worth $30,000 or more, you need to probate the Will in the Surrogate's Court. Once the Will is admitted to probate, the Court will issue Letters Testamentary naming you as Executor.

I agree with the other authors. If the Will must be probated, probate it and Letters Testamentary will be issued.
