Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York
My father, Seymour Barnett passed April of 1993 and my presence was denied at the reading of the will as my step-mother (Cecilyn Griffiths/Barnett) refuse to divulge the Executors name or any information thereof. However, she did mention a "Joint Tendency" and I was not entitled to anything (assets / life insurance) until her demise. Prior to my father"s death, he informed me that I am listed as the beneficiary on 2 life insurance policies...one of which was shared between my step-mother and me. Both policies are through New York Life unforunately, I do not have the policy numbers. But I do have his death certificate and obiturary. I am desperately seeking Legal Advice, any assistance will be grately appreciated. Sincerely, Suzette Barnett

Waiting almost 20 years makes responding most difficult, as, unless you just became an adult, your rights may have been lost. Plus, some critical facts are missing, such as whether or not your step-mother is still living? First place to start is with the Surrogate of the County where your father lived when he died. If a Will existed and was probated, documents about his estate are public records and can be viewed at that office. Information, including the Will can be obtained and copies made also, although a fee may be involved. The Will may contain useful information. The insurance company might help, but again, after almost 20 years these records may no longer exist. This is a response to an Internet question and the reply is not intended to be legal advice or as creating an attorney-client relationship.
