exactly how do i find out if a will was probated?

You need to go to the Surrogate's Court in the county in which the deceased person resided, and the clerk can check for you.

I agree, adding that a Will is not submitted for probate until its maker has died, and then only if there are assets that need a probate to handle (anything that does not have a registered survivor or designated beneficiary.
