Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York
Guardianship of Parent
My father has Alzheimers and is getting worse, but lives with his girlfriend in deplorable conditions. His bills are not getting paid on time and his health is going down hill fast, I want to get guardianship of him so I can get him in assisted living so there will be someone around close by to monitor him and see that he eats good and takes his medicines right. I don't have the resorces to hire a lawyer, is there anyother way I can do this? He needs the help badly, but with the alzheimers doesn't relize it and you can't explain it to him. Thank you

Re: Guardianship of Parent
You might try Legal Aid to assist you. It is difficult to follow the statutory requirements pro se (by yourself) as the guardianship proceeding requires an examination and reports by 2 disinterested psychiatrists, notice to all parties in interest, the appointment of a legal guardian for your father to represent him in the proceeding, etc.
Due to the complications, it is recommended that you get an attorney proficient in these matters to handle the case.
Also, fees can be paid from your father's assets and be awarded by the Court issuing the final determination.
Since you talk about assisted living, what and whose assets will be used to cover the monthly costs?
