How long after a Death before the will is read, and who is supposed to ask for the reading. The executor or just the children of the deceased?

A will is only read in the movies.

The Executor applies for probate of the will in the Surrogates' Court in the county where the decedent resided.

If the Executor delays, another beneficiary or heir can make application.

Usually an attorney is used for this process.
