Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York
My mother-in-law is 88 and lives with her niece and her husband a great distance away. Her only child was the father of my two adult children. He passed away years ago. The niece has asked for the social security numbers of my two children (her blood grandchildren). She says she needs them because they are beneficiaries of the trust. Her niece is legal guardian and trustee of the estate. She has complete control and easily influences my mother in law to her way of thinking. I do not think my mother in law is able to stand up for herself nor does she know anything is amiss. Is there anything my children can do to protect their interests? Thank you.

As I read your facts, it appears your children may be beneficiaries of a trust and may now be eligible for something from the trust. I suggest starting by asking to see a copy of the trust and getting some information regarding its assets and how they have been handled since the trust was created. Contrary to your suggestion, everything may be legitimate but much more information is needed to properly evaluate what you ask and how you should proceed.
