Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

I was named in a will of a friend who passed away 2 years ago. The will was probated in October 2009 and since the I have heard nothing from the lawyer handling the estate. He has refused to return my calls and has not answered any of my letters and will not give any information on the status of what's happening to the estate. Can he legally do that or does he have to update all who is named in the will, what is happening/

I am going on an insufficient info here but remember, all probated wills are filed in probate court. Many people don't even have wills-they have trusts and other methods to bypass probate and, in fact, that is preferential to leaving money in a will. Trusts are private. For all you know, maybe he did not name you in his will and/or in his trust. Check Probate Court in your county first. Since the atty is responsible for wrapping up the will and informing beneficiaries, maybe you are not a beneficiary.
