Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Who Owns This House?

My great-grandfather died before 1939. He owned a house. He had two children (my grandmother and great aunt) when he died and spouse was deceased. He died with no will and the children assumed the house. No title change. My grandmother lived in the house. My great aunt died with no will and her daughter was presumed half owner. My grandmother died with no will in 1985. Her children (my mother, aunt and uncle) assumed 1/3 of my grandmother's half. What I want to know is, who really owns the house? It is still in my great-grandfather's name. The taxes have been paid and are up to date. My uncle still lives in the house. Does he have squatters rights? Any information will be greatly appreciated. The house is in Nassau County. My mother lives in Las Vegas, but is very interested in finding out any information. Thank you for your time.
