Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

paying a nursing home with money in trust

My aunt is in a nursing home. As I understand it, her assets must be used to pay the home until they are exhausted and she has to go on Medicaid. There is money in a savings account in trust for me; does this money have to be used to pay the nursing home? If so, can she gift the money to me now or is there another way to protect it?
