Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York
Question re; estate, taxes
My father died recently. He has about 300 dollars in a checking account and a couple of checks came in for him after he died that amount to approximately 1,900.00. Other than that he had no assets to probate and he owes $55,000 in debt. Probate seems kind of pointless in this instance. What do you do in an instance like this?

You file a petition for a small estate administration. It is very simple (and cheap). Forms and information may be obtained at the Surrogate's Court.
