Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

how do we refuse executorship?

My mother in law named my husband as executor of her will and we want no part of it! She has enormous debt, no money, a house that is in terrible disrepair and hasn't been cleaned in years. No organized financial record, etc. and we live in another part of the country. She refuses to remove him as executor. What can we do?

You can't force a person to change their will. That can get you in legal trouble. You can, however, refuse to be executor when she dies.
