You can check the Surrgate's web site, if there is one. They usually have a link on the site or a brochure that spells out the responsibilities. Most administrators and executors use an attorney or accountant to assist them, as there are many forms involved, both during the administration and to close the estate, as well as an accounting that must go to everyone involved.

You would refer to the New York statutes, which are the Estates Powers and Trust Law, and the Surrogate Court Procedures Act. In addition, consider contacting the Surrogate Court of your county, who may have printed material regarding the duties of administrators.
