Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Step mother left no will

When my father died, my step mother did not come forth with his will so she got all his money. When she died she did not leave a will so all my fathers money went to a distant cousin of hers. Do step children have any legal rights to inherit from a step mother considering she stole my fathers money? (He told my mother he had money for my brother and I but with no will presented, no money)

Re: Step mother left no will

Under the NY intestacy laws, if a parent dies without a will $50000 + 1/2 estate goes to spouse, remainder to children. Therefore, I do not understand how the wife received all the money if there is no will - unless the amount of money was less than $50,000.
