Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York
My stepdad lived in my house as a life tenant. He died. Does his family have the right to enter the house at their leisure while his estate is being processed? Can I change the locks so that they cannot enter without my permission?

Mr. Slater is correct. The life tenancy ended at his death. The ownership of the property reverted to you. It is not part of his estate. His heirs have no claim whatsoever.

I concur. If he has any personal property in the house, they may have rights, but they cannot enter indiscriminately and without prior notice to you.
