Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Unclaimed funds nightmare, please help me...

Hello. My father passed when I was 8 years old. I am now 33. My brother was the administrator of the estate. My brother left me, changed his number, and I was left to live with cousins. I haven't seen or heard from him in over 2 decades. I found a serious amount of unclaimed funds my father had (stocks from his old job, MetLife stocks). I cannot retrieve these funds because I was not the administrator of the estate (unless my brother is dead and I have a death certificate stating so). I don't know if he's dead or alive. He'd be in his 50's now. I tried to call VitalChek, but because I am not a daughter or his wife, they won't let me search for a death certificate. Please help me. I have no idea what to do.

Searching for your brother's death certificate was a good first step. Replacing your brother as administrator through the Courts would probably require service by publication, which can be costly. Feel free to contact my office for a brief complimentary consultation on your case.
