my father just passed away is their a way to find out which lawyer he used

I am presuming you are trying to find out if he had a Will and he never told you if he did or who he might have used? This is difficult as he could have used a local lawyer or someone not local. Easiest is to advertise in an attorney publication or a newspaper of wide coverage, inserting a legal notice something to the effect like "Anyone who has information regarding a Last Will and Testament of 'name', late of 'where he lived', who died 'date of death', please contact 'your contact information'.

Assuming you are looking for a copy of your fathers will and that going through his personal papers has produced no results, I would suggest that you contact the Surrogates Court in the County that he lived in. It is possible that he placed a copy on file for such an occasion.
