i am about to start writing freelance article for a trade journal. what copyrights do i have?

I recommend you tentatively agree on all the terms and conditions of payment with the Chief Editor after submitting the article, but prior to the trade journal being published.

Ideally, you should retain the copyright to articles you write, but its very possible for your copyright to be limited by the terms of your engagement. I suggest that you have your lawyer review the terms of writing for this trade journal so as to determine the status of your copyright in these articles.
