Legal Question in Disability Law in North Carolina

high school student dealing with discriminatory comments

Our son is an above the knee amputee. He has had to deal with comments made by faculty members at his high school regarding his prosthesis. These remarks were hurtful and discriminatory. These teachers made statements to him bringing his prosthetic device to his attention, and in one case to those around him. For example, one teacher asked him how he could possibly be involved in a particular sport ''wearing that thing?'' He is going on a trip this summer and the teacher going with the group told him he put him on a different flight than his friends with only one layover, so he ''wouldn't hold up the rest of the group in case he gets held up by security.'' These comments have been embarrassing to our son, who never brings attention to himself regarding his disability. He has never asked for special treatment, and fully participates in athletics and school activities. Is there something I can do legally with regards to these comments?

Re: high school student dealing with discriminatory comments

You can legally bring them to the attention of the school administration and makes sure they put a stop to them. Faculty can be curious, but they are not there to be hurtful AND, if your son was singled out for different travel accomodations without consulting you, this is certainly cause for parental involvement. .
