Legal Question in Business Law in North Carolina
I received a verbal committment from an Author who I performed editing work for. We communicated in email and via text messages. His emails outlined specific work he wanted me to do and the deadline and he indicated on more than one occasion that I would be paid for my services. Now he is saying he never intended to pay me 5 months after the completing the work. Can the emails and txt messages serve as contractual agreement to sue him for pay?

Any attorney will say the emails and text messages are evidence of the terms of your contract. These need to be examined before you file a lawsuit. Consult with an attorney in your area for specifics.
