Legal Question in Business Law in North Carolina

I am currently unemployed and have been for a period of 1yr. or more. Prior to this I had a very small part-time optical store business which ran in the red with no profit due to costs of material, etc. I have an outstanding lab bill and just today received a letter from a collection agency claiming that they are prepared to file suit against me for the total due of $1,463.62 which includes late fees that the lab has assessed. I am being supported by my 87 yr. old dad who has a very limited income and is very ill. I have systemic lupus and I have very limited energy and cannot find gainful employment. I own nothing, not even a vehicle and have surended my life to my faith in God. I do not own anything of value as I have sold off all past possessions of any worth just to survive. Is there anyway that I can have this debt reduced or resolved. Because of my faith, I would like to make even small payments over a long period of time.

Thank you in advance for your help.

As a franchise attorney, let me first say I'm sorry to hear about your predicament. It is not likely they will file suit for this relatively (to them) small amount, unless there in an attorneys' fee clause in something you signed with the lab. That said, collection agencies like to collect, even if it's not 100%. You will find they are very willing to work something out, even an extended payment plan. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice and keep up your faith in God.
