Legal Question in Technology Law in North Carolina

Accessing illegal internet web sites

I am responsible for a computer network at a conference center. Guests and groups are given free access to the Internet if they provider their own laptop computers. I am concerned as to what the situation is if a guest uses our internet connection to access illegal web sites? If our ISP is notified of this who is responsible and what actions could be taken towards the person(s) found responsible? As we have no means of tracking the guest in such a situation would I be the person found responsible?

Thank you in advance.

Re: Accessing illegal internet web sites

I'm not sure what you mean when you refer to "illegal" web sites. As far as I know, it is legal (in the United States, anyway) to visit any web site.

Besides, I don't see how you or your employer can be held responsible for what others elect to do on-line via your web connection. I'm sure you provide your guests with telephone access and that you don't fear the consequences of any criminal acts your guests commit while on the phone; by the same token, you need not be concerned with what your guests do while using your internet service.
