Legal Question in Technology Law in North Carolina

Email Account Removed Without Warning

I've had a university email account

for several years now. Since

sometime last fall I've been

forwarding all emails to another

account. Yesterday, I realized I

wasn't receiving any emails from my

uncc.edu account. I contacted the

school and they informed me that

my whole account was removed

because I hadn't been enrolled in

two semesters. Yet I received zero

emails regarding the termination. I

had important emails stored on

that account and would have

moved them if I knew the account

was going to be removed. It also

seems odd that my account was

removed in February which does

not coincide with the school's

semester system. I have feeling

my emails are lost forever. Do I

have any legal standing if the

emails are gone forever or if they

won't allow me retrieve my emails?

Re: Email Account Removed Without Warning

It is likely you do not have a good basis to pursue the university. My guess is you signed an access agreement that likely said that the account would be deactivated if you did not remain enrolled. You should always back up email stored on any remote server.

You should, however, see a lawyer in NC who can advise you as to any specific computer access laws that may apply in NC.
