Collection letter re:1989 debt
I have received a phone call re: a 1989 debt on account I no longer have. I told them to cease and desist from contacting me regarding this, that I had no open Citibank account. I have since received a letter stating that this is in reference to a loan fron 04/10/1989 and that this collection agency purchased this loan 01/14/2003. It also says that intrest continues to accrue an will continue until the account is satisfied.
I have a copy of my currnet as of 02/2006 credit report from both Equifax and Experian, and I do not show an active account on either report. I do show Citi account on the Experian report, but the last reported date is 04/1996, and recent balance shows 0, paid as of 1996.
How do I get this collection agency from contacting me any more?

Re: Collection letter re:1989 debt
I assume the letter you got was the one they are required to send after a consumer denies a debt. I would write back and continue to deny the debt and demand they send proof to you. They are only required to "verify" the debt and tell you the name of the original creditor. Ask them to contact you only in writing. If the debt is that old, unless there were payments made within the last 3 or maybe 4 years, they won't win if they sue you.
