Legal Question in Consumer Law in North Carolina
I have six gift certificates from the Martin County Chamber of Commerce that were purchased with cash they have expired. On five of the gift certificates it states void after 1 year and the other says void after 90 days. they are dated 12/2/13, 12/12/16 and 12/15/17. These gift certificates were purchased by my husband's employer and given to his employees as gifts. The gift certificates are to be used at the businesses in Martin County that are members of the Chamber. My husband passed away last May and I found these in my husband's desk. I don't think he realized they had an expiration date and was just saving them for that one big purchase that he never got to make. I attempted to get the Chamber to replace the gift certificates but they said their Board of Directors has made the decision not to replace expired gift certificates. Do I have any legal means to recover this money or at least a portion of it?

Unfortunately, no. The Federal law that states gift cards have to be valid for 5 years does not apply to paper gift certificates.
