Legal Question in Consumer Law in North Carolina
M mother in law was given a gift certificate in April 2012 for a manicure/pedicure. She has been ill and recently found the certificate which had been misplaced. It has an expiration date of Oct 2012. She cannot use it before that date. My question is: Is the expiration date legal? Do gift certificates follow the same rule as gift "cards"? Does she have any recourse other than giving the gift card away to someone else? What are her options? Thanks.

Unfortunately, the date on a gift certificate is supported by the law. The idea is that the purchaser understood that there was a limitation if purchase and agreed to it by purchasing the certificate. I would go to the merchant/ service provider of the certificate and see if they will still honor it.
