Legal Question in Consumer Law in North Carolina

I recently got a call from a telemarketer advertising a new mail meter. I was told I just needed to put $30 worth of postage on the meter to get started and in exchange for trying the mail meter for 60 days they would give me airline tickets buy one get one free. I recieved the meter and the voucher for the airline came one week later. The voucher was not what I had expected, in order for me to use them I had to go through their travel agency. The price they quoted me to use the voucher was 3 times higher than the airline website. To make a long story short. When it was time to return the meter, I called the company and told them that I needed a return label to send it back. The sales rep. went on to convince me to keep it another 60 days since I had not used any of the the postage out of the meter. I went on to explain to the sales rep. that I had a small business and I really did not use postage stamps. Most of my accounts are set up to pay online.

When I sent it back. I was told that my time had lapsed and that I was locked into a one year contract for meter rentals. I have returned the meter and they have recieved it. Yet I am getting bills in the mail for a one year contract. When I spoke with the company, they said that my contract was valid via phone conversation about the trail period. I feel like I have fallen victim to a scam. I would never agree to purchase a year of postage meter service knowing that I do not mail items out. Please advice me on what I should do. The company has turned my case over to one of their investigators who says that their phone rep covered all of thier proceedors.

Unfortunately it sounds like this a business model for this company. You may have valid claims and ways of getting them to stop but you will be hard pressed to find an attorney to help you because it won't be cost effective. If it happened to me, I would make one attempt via certified letter, to demand they stop billing you and if they don't, I would be proactive and file a lawsuit as well as report them to any appropriate agencies - Better Business Bureau, NC Attorney General Consumer Affairs, etc.
