Legal Question in Consumer Law in North Carolina

I recently received a notice from my apartment manager that I owed a payment towards my rent. When I asked about this discrepancy she told me that I owe this amount because my rent went up an extra 15 dollars when my lease was renewed in 2011. However, I never received this is writing nor did I sign the documentation that I was aware of the increase in rent. Because I was unaware of the increased rent, I continued to pay the same rent amount that I'd paid the year before. TThe only thing I received from her in August of 2011 was an email saying my lease was automatically renewed. They never contacted me about not paying the full amount until yesterday, which is almost a full year since my automatic lease renewal. Yesterday was the first time in almost a year that I heard from management concerning rent. Would I have to pay the back rent if I never knew my rent increased and I didn't sign anything that said I accepted the increase?

Look at the lease and make sure there is no provision about increase in rent. Otherwise, if you renewed lease with no mention of rental increase, I don't see how they expect to hold you responsible. May need to get letter from attorney to set them straight though.
