Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

Check Error/Collections

I graduated from my University in May 07. I recieved a check for $600 in late Dec 07. I assumed this check was for any overages in my student account. This had happened in the past, I had paid tuition then scholarships/grants would come through and I would be reimbursed later, this is why I thought the check was not out of the normal. About 4 weeks after I received this check I received a letter explaining they had sent the check in error and would need the funds returned. I called the school and got to the root of why they sent me the money. The school will not budge on working with me about the funds. I feel that they made the mistake and sent me the check with no explanation, then asked for it back. What legal right do they have to the money, especially after such a long time not being formally associated with the school? What recourse do I have with the school? Essentially I feel as though the school should at the least be responsible past aplogizing for the mistake and accept fault monetarily. What is my and the schools legal grounds in this matter? Thank you for the counsel.

Re: Check Error/Collections

If you agree that the check was sent in error and not owed to you then you should return the money.
