Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

civil summon

I received a summons,and have 30 days to reply. I would like to know what does it mean to answer the complaint? This is for a personal loan, that was not paid. Do I need an attorney?

It means answering each specific allegation with an admission, denial, partial denial, etc. and raising any defenses or counterclaims you may have.
