If you can only afford $25, then forget it. That's not even enough to cover the interest.
She calls because you talk to her. She wants money. You don't have it. So why do you keep talking to her? You can if you want, but its a lost cause. The debt collector does not care why you can't pay. I would not answer the phone if it rings and only deal with them in writing.
If you can only afford $25, then you need that cash a whole lot more than some fat-cat
credit card company or debt collector. Put your $25 in savings and keep saving money until you get enough to settle the debt. Figure on settling for between 50% and 80%, depending on if you have been sued or not. You may ebevn be able to do better than that, but it depends on the creditor or collector, the balance, how badly they want money and other factors, such as do you have the funds to pay in a lump sum. The more funds you can do in a lump sum the lower the creditor will go. Before you pay a penny more, you get any settlement agreements in writing first. The agreements outline how much you will pay, when you pay and so forth.
You can settle the debt in a lump sum. And yes, they can sue you. Getting sued is not great and it depends on your assets, but they may not be able to get anything even if they sue you. There is no wage garnishment in NC. So let them fuss, save your money and resolve this when you are able to.
