Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina
Ihave a garnishment from a debt collector and want to know how to stop it

Garnishment is a legal term, are you using this in the sense that I understand it? Garnishment typically is only available to a creditor after the creditor obtains a judgment against you. In North Carolina, there is only very limited wage garnishment for child support, tax debt, student loan debt or monies owed to the state or an ambulance company.
So what kind of debt is this? The short answer is you stop it by: (a) paying your bill in full; (b) filing bankruptcy, assuming that the garnishment is for a debt that would be dischargeable (child support, some tax debts and most federal student loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy); or (c) working out some kind of resolution.
I give free evaluations by email and charge $50 for a 30 minute phone consult. I need to know to whom money is owed, who is garnishing you, for what, whether a judgment was entered and if so, when. Please contact me at [email protected].
