Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

old medical bills

I have lots of medical bills dating back as far as 1996. The hospital is got all this turned over to collection agencies. I have a law firm calling my home every day. Is the statue of limitations run out and what do I need to do. I can't afford to pay them and have told them so, but they won't give up?
