Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina
I owe 50,000.00 in credit card bills. My FATHER has CD's and checking accounts that I am on as "Joint"- so I can pay his bills. Can the credit card companies go after HIS accounts for my debt?

Yes and no. The credit card companies can do nothing until they sue you. Once they get a judgment against you, they can try to collect on the judgment and anything that you may own jointly with your father is at risk. Your name should not be on his checking account at all so get it off there. If he is mentally competent, he can execute a financial power of attorney, This will give you the power to handle banking for him, including writing checks. Get your name off of the CDs as well. There is no reason that your name must be on CDs in order to pay your father's bills. Again, a power of attroney would allow to you to transact any business if needed.
I draft powers of attorney for a reasonable fee. Have your father contact me if he is interested at [email protected].
You also have a lot of debt and you need to figure out how you are going to resolve it. Do you want to file bankruptcy? Get a bankruptcy consult and see if bankruptcy is right for you. If you do not wish to file bankruptcy, have you considered debt resolution? It might be more affordable than you think.
There are many many scam debt resolution companies. Here is a link to one of the few legitimate companies:
