if I owe a rental company a past due balance on merchandise, can they try to break in my house to recover that property if I am not home?

No. But they are allowed self-help repossession generally if it can be accomplished without a breach of the peace.
Read your security/rental agreement. I am sure that there is a clause in there which provides that you have to return the stuff if you don't pay for it. They really want money, not the property back. If you do not pay, they will take you to court. But in rare cases where people are actively hiding assets so they cannot be repossessed the company will bring criminal charges. Its wrong to hide assets to prevent their repossession.
